Romania Mission, Strengths 101, Free Books

L U K E 2 1 : 3 4 - 2 2 : 6

“Be always on the watch,” Jesus warned his disciples and instructed them to pray so they could stand firm. No one is immune to the anxieties of life. Over time, the cares of this world will overwhelm a person who caters to the whims of the crowd. The chief priests and teachers of the law were afraid of the  people. They had studied the written scriptures their entire lives, but bowed     to public opinion. They knew what they should do but lacked the fortitude to commit to God.

Likewise, Judas had heard Jesus’s words for three years but had not taken them to heart. Day after day, he sat in the shadow of the Master but stayed on the outskirts. He did not seek God’s Will but sought personal gain. Disillusioned, he let down his guard and allowed Satan to overcome his will. The result was his betrayal of Jesus.

How can we find the strength to ignore public opinion and live our lives according to God’s plans? How can we live, not in Jesus’ shadow, but be firmly in the center of His will? The answer to both questions, of course, is through prayer, studying, and applying the Scriptures.

P S A L M 9 1 : 1 - 2 , 9 - 1 6

Friend, do you long for a moment of silence from the noise of this chaotic world? Do you desire to find perfect rest curling up in the lap of your Heavenly Father? I challenge you to take a moment right here and now to breathe HIM in and just lay back into His wide-open arms. Cry out to Jesus! May His peace overwhelm you and take you to a place of stillness.

I love acronyms and one of my favorites is P. R.A.Y (Praise-Repent-Ask-Yield). Sounds easy enough, right? I must confess yielding is difficult for me. Have you ever heard the phrase “silence is golden”? This act of yielding requires us to be “actively silent” before our God to hear Him speak.

The philosopher Plato said, “Wise men speak because they have something to say; Fools because they have to say something.” I pray that the Lord will give you wisdom to speak when needed and strength to keep silent when necessary.

Sometimes we say more without words.

Lord, wrap us in the knowledge of YOU so that our trust is no longer in YOU but is YOU. Help us find perfect trust in resting in You and Your forever faithfulness. Amen.

Responding to the Earthquake

Dear Stillmeadow Family and Friends,

Greetings in the strong name of our Resurrected King, the Alpha and Omega, the friend of Sinners, the Savior of the World, Jesus Christ.

This week the countries of Turkey and Syria have been hit with a devastating earthquake. What can we do in the face of such tragedy? Here are a few ways to respond.

GRIEVE

Pour out your feelings of hurt and sadness about the loss of life. Tell God how horrible you think this is. Remember He is “the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” (2 Corinthians 1:3)

SUPPORT FINANCIALLY

The Church of the Nazarene has been ministering in Syria for 100 years, especially reaching out to refugees and those in need (read this article for a brief history). We have the opportunity to partner with them in serving those in need. The initial response is focused on distributing food, providing needed supplies like blankets, and sheltering people whose homes were destroyed. To support the Church of the Nazarene’s response to the devastating earthquake in Syria, please donate now by giving to the Nazarene Compassionate Ministries Earthquake Crisis Fund: https://give.ncm.org/donate/140021

SEND CRISIS CARE KITS

Nazarene Compassionate Ministries provides quick help by having Crisis Care Kits ready to distribute in times of need. You can help by creating and donating Crisis Care Kits.

  • 1 Shampoo (12 to 18 oz.) tape flip top

  • 2 Bars of Soap (bath size or larger)

  • 1 Toothpaste (4.0 to 6.4 oz.)

  • 3 Toothbrushes (in original packaging)

  • 1 Box of Band-Aids (30 or more)

  • 1 Fingernail clipper (no toenail clipper)

  • 1 Sturdy hair comb for all hair types

  • 2 Hand towels

  • 4 Pocket-sized pkgs. facial tissue

  • 1 Beanie Baby-size stuffed toy

Each Crisis Care Kit (CCK) should contain only the items/quantities listed. $2 donation  per kit will pay shipping. (Donation for shipping can be placed in offering box)

Place all items into a 2-2.5-gallon zip-lock bag. You can drop your kit off in the room for compassionate ministry donations.

This list can also be found at www.stillnaz.com/crisis-care-kit

REMEMBER GOD’S PROMISES

When we are confronted with this kind of news, it can stir up the sadness and fear. Christians counter the fear of the unknown with what we do know. Here are some helpful verses that we can say aloud when we are afraid.

Proverbs 3:5–”Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”

Jeremiah 29:11, 13–”For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future…You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”

John 14:27–”Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

Hebrews 13:5b–God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”

PRAY

Cover the victims, their loved ones, the churches, the government, the aid workers in prayer.

If you don’t know what to pray, use the Psalms to pray. Consider Psalm 31, 46, & 55.

And if you need prayer, let us know at www.stillnaz.com/pray

“The Lord Almighty is with us” (Psalm 46:11)

“[Our] times are in [His] hands” (Psalm 31:15) so,

“Cast your cares on the Lord, and He will sustain you” (Psalm 55:22)

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Josh and the Stillmeadow Pastoral Team

Ash Wednesday (next week), IF:Gathering, New Groups

Dear Family of God,

Today’s reading (John 21:1-15) has one of my favorite Jesus quotes:

Come and have breakfast! (John 21:12)

Jesus is always hospitable and welcoming.

And the story surrounding this breakfast invitation is a powerful reminder. The disciples fished all night on their own strength and came up empty, but when they obeyed Jesus they came up abundantly.

So, today! Let us listen to the One who meets us after our weary nights, and let us obey Him and experience abundance and intimacy with Him.

Preparing for Lent, Membership Class

Dear Family of God,

“What is truth?”

In the final hours of Jesus we hear Pilate ask Jesus this question (John 18:38). And we see the Jewish leaders twist the truth to get rid of Jesus and we see Peter deny the truth to escape the pain of knowing Jesus. But Jesus does not hide, twist or deny the truth. Because He is “the way, the TRUTH, and the life” (John 14:6). And his “truth will set you free” (John 8:32).

A Prayer

Deception lies all around,

Blinding us to Your holy ground.

May our ears hear Your sound,

As we rest in being found.

A Blessing

“As you go about your day, may His truth guide you in what you think, how you process all that is happening, how you plan what is next. Truth is with you. And the truth will set you free.”

In today’s reading, Jesus told the disciples that they’d face opposition in following Him. But listen to what He said:

“You do not belong to the world,

but I have chosen you out of the world.”

They were chosen out of the world not to escape the world but to be sent to the world.

Consider this as you go about your day: Jesus has chosen you and you belong to Him.

The Porters, Faith Promise, and IF!

Dear Stillmeadow Family!

This Sunday, February 6, Jerry and Toni Porter will tell us about their adventures in sharing the faith around the globe. It is a privilege to be a part of a global church family!

Pray about how you can financially join in!

As they come, pray about how to financially support the mission through Faith Promise giving. We encourage you to give above your regularly tithes to the global mission! Come Sunday to hear more!

(Oh yeah, the Porters are still going to preach in our “I Am” Series!)

Today’s reading in John 13, shows Jesus at his fullest, loving his disciples through washing their feet. And when Peter resisted, Jesus said:

“You do not realize now what I am doing,

but later you will understand.”

Following Jesus is the process of moving from “not realizing what God is doing” to “understanding.” And the process is in His timing, not ours.

Peter did not fully understand that the Way of the Messiah was the Way of the Servant. He hadn’t seen the crucifixion yet. But years after the resurrection, most assuredly under the influence of the love he received from the Servant Messiah that day, he wrote: “Love each other deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms” (1 Pet 4:8-10).

Let us serve like that, even though we do not fully understand what God is doing.

Stillmeadow Weekly — Abundant Life Challenge, Parents Night Out

Dear Stillmeadow Family!

(we’ve updated our website, and also switched the name of our weekly email from Welcome Wednesday to Stillmeadow Weekly…and this is the first Stillmeadow Weekly…now onto the news!)

In “The Way” E Stanley Jones said that faith in Jesus is not just something you hold, but something that holds you.

And that goes right with today’s reading in John 10 where Jesus says that his sheep cannot be snatched from his hand. His hold on you cannot be broken. Believers cannot be snatched from the loving hand of our saving shepherd.

So today, hold on in faith…He holds on to you. His grip is sure. Even when you're slipping or weary. He won't let go.
