Chili/Soup Cookoff, A Nite Together, Kids Night Out, Passage Blessing
Dear friends,
Quick Plug: I sure hope you’ll join us for the Chili/Soup Cookoff this Sunday night from 4:30-6:30!
On this day after Martin Luther King Day and Inauguration Day, I am struck by this harmony of truth: 1) Believers in Jesus Christ belong to a kingdom that never ends and 2) are called to bring the truth and beauty of that kingdom into whatever nation or kingdom we reside.
There is no inauguration day in the Kingdom of God, because God has been, is and will always be king forever and ever. There is no transition in power in his kingdom.
Martin Luther King was a champion of the truth and beauty of God’s kingdom, that all people are created equal regardless of their race or social class. His Letter From Birmingham Jail, where he was imprisoned for protesting against racial segregation, was written to church leaders of his day, and remains an iconic challenge to the church. And in light of our message series last year on time and our current series on GodStory OurStory, I thought this paragraph is a particularly poignant reminder of how we live as citizens of God’s kingdom, or to quote King, “coworkers with God.”
I received a letter this morning from a white brother in Texas which said, "All Christians know that the colored people will receive equal rights eventually, but is it possible that you are in too great of a religious hurry? It has taken Christianity almost 2000 years to accomplish what it has. The teachings of Christ take time to come to earth." All that is said here grows out of a tragic misconception of time. It is the strangely irrational notion that there is something in the very flow of time that will inevitably cure all ills. Actually, time is neutral. It can be used either destructively or constructively. I am coming to feel that the people of ill will have used time much more effectively than the people of good will. We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the vitriolic words and actions of the bad people but for the appalling silence of the good people. We must come to see that human progress never rolls in on wheels of inevitability. It comes through the tireless efforts and persistent work of men willing to be coworkers with God, and without this hard work time itself becomes an ally of the forces of social stagnation.
I encourage you to read and be challenged by the rest of the letter, but more importantly, to join with and continue with God in his kingdom work of reconciliation, justice, and mercy.
For God’s Kingdom,
Pastor Josh

A Nite Together, Kids Night Out, Passage Blessing, Chili/Soup Cookoff
Dear church family,
We’re two weeks into our new year and our year long message series: GodStory OurStory. Yesterday Pastor John (SLC) and Pastor Jade ( YCC ) shared God’s message from Genesis 2. One of the most important things about you, and every human, is that you were designed for relationship: with God and with others.
In Paul’s iconic reflection on love in 1 Corinthians 13, he points to the truth that love is knowing God and that it is growing in knowing God as he knows us. He says, “For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.” (1 Cor 13:12)
My hope for you this year is that you would experience the growing in knowing God as he knows you. That as we go through this series, gather for worship and in groups, pray and serve together…that we each would personally experience and express God’s great love for us and that we would all corporately experience and express God’s great love for the church and the world.
If you haven’t jumped into our annual reading plan, it’s not too late. You can pick up a journal at the welcome center, sign up for the plan on YouVersion, or follow along here. It’s been great to see people’s reflections on the readings so far in the YouVersion App. It’s an awesome way to experience God’s great love on a daily basis.
Cheering and praying for you!
Pastor Josh
PS No one knows you better than God does, and no one loves you more than he does, and no one paid a greater price for you than he did, and no one is here for you as much as he is.

Dear People Made in God’s Image,
Happy New Year friends! Isn’t it something that the first poem in scripture is this?
“So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.”
Genesis 1:27 NIV
https://bible.com/bible/111/gen.1.27.NIV
These illuminating lines reveal that you and I and everyone who has ever taken a breath, are equally noble. All women and all men have a sacred dignity and a sacred responsibility. This means that God thinks you’re a pretty big deal. But it also means that he doesn’t think you’re more special than anybody else. As images of God, we are made to worship God and serve his creation.
This key truth runs through the story of scripture, and we will be revisiting it through our message series this year. At the start of this year, my prayer is that through Jesus, the perfect image of God (Colossians 1:15), you will grow in understanding of your own dignity and responsibility to God, and that through the creative Holy Spirit, you will be empowered to treat all people with the dignity God has given them.
In His Hands and In His Time,
Pastor Josh

Christmas Eve, Sabbath Sunday, LifeGroups
Merry Christmas Stillmeadow Family,
If I don’t get to see you at our Christmas Eve Candlelight services tomorrow, please know how grateful I am for you and for the year that God has given us. I am looking forward to what God has in store for us in 2025 and am praying that he will renew your vision and strength as you follow him in his plans.
As we wrap up our advent devotional, I encourage you to join in our 2025 daily readings plan that you can pick up online or at the Welcome Desk. In the meantime, be encouraged by Chastity Frederick’s reflection on Mary’s Magnificat in Luke 1:39-55.
Mary and Elizabeth, two women, unlikely to be celebrated in their culture, unlikely to carry a child – one because of her age and infertility and one because of her marital status and young age. Both loved and chosen by God.
How many times in our world do we believe lies of not enough or “unlikely”: not rich enough, wise enough, young enough, old enough, strong enough, educated enough, ____________. God is not bound by “not enough,” in fact, it is where we see the glory of His work.
Pregnant at the time we enter these verses – Mary greets Elizabeth and the baby in her womb “leaps for joy” as she was filled with the Holy Spirit. This not by accident as we read earlier in Luke that John was going to be filled with the Holy Spirit before he was born (I am still processing this truth!) It dawned on me the power in this moment – Mary sings to God the Father, while Jesus, God-incarnate grows in her womb, and the Spirit fills Elizabeth.
The word baby here is brephos, the same word used later in Scripture to describe Jesus as a newborn and the children being brought to Jesus.
Mary and Elizabeth humbly recognize the holy calling on their lives – Both fully aware of their circumstances and fully confident in their God. “His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation.” #JTAG
Today, would you reflect on the glory of this Word?
God, Thank you for sending the Savior of the world in the most-humble of ways and for reminding me that you are not bound by the world’s “not enoughs.” Make me confidently aware of your presence & humbly aware of my circumstances. Extend your mercy, LORD, from generation to generation.
In your Mighty Name, Amen!
In His Hands and In His Time,
Pastor Josh

Discipleship Courses, 2025 Reading Plan, Ignite Christmas Party
Dear Stillmeadow Family,
What a joy to be led by the JTAG Choir in worship yesterday! If you missed it: check it out here.
We’re beginning our third week of advent: Joy! Be encouraged by Julie Rosenau’s reflections on Zephaniah 3:14-20.
This season, as with all advent / Christmas seasons, we are celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. You may know that I come from a musical background. My dad was a Music Pastor (first at the First Church of the Nazarene on Pine Street ). My mom plays the piano / organ by ear (in any key) and sang with her dad, my dad and Kline Sisters. And I play the trumpet in various bands and churches and piano.
When I think of Zephaniah 3:14-20, I think of the chorus “Mighty to Save.” But there’s so much more to the depth of this passage AND His love for us!!! First of all He is in our midst: every moment, second, hour, day, week, month, year, etc. Yes, He is mighty, but He’s with us!! And it gets better: not ONLY does He save us, He is (right now) rejoicing over YOU, me and all of us! The dictionary says rejoicing is: to feel joy or great delight!
We’ve probably all heard this in our lives prior to this, right? But THINK on it, meditate on it and remember it the next time you hear it! We are celebrating the season of our Savior’s birthday, but RIGHT NOW He is feeling joyful over YOU and taking great delight in YOU. Just think how awesome this should make us feel when we sing JOY to the World.
In His Hands and In His Time,
Pastor Josh

Christmas Schedule, Prayer Groups
Dear Stillmeadow Family,
We’re beginning our second week of advent. Be encouraged by Scott Mingus Sr’s reflections on Malachi 3:1-4.
The long-ago writer ponders the question, “Who can stand when he appears?” It’s a query that has resonated for more than two thousand years. Malachi states that the Lord will send a messenger to prepare the way before the Messiah, the messenger of the covenant, appears. John the Baptist later fulfilled the prophecy in verse 1, preparing the way in the wilderness for the public declaration of Jesus as the son of God.
Jesus’ first coming, the event that John so eagerly related to his followers, was a bold reminder to the Jews and generations of later Christians that our ultimate redemption was near. We all need to be refined and purified with the fire of the Holy Spirit and offer our lives as “offerings in righteousness,” not half-heartedly but with our entire minds, bodies, and souls. Then, we can wait for the second coming or resurrection with the confidence that we will stand before the Lord with a redeemed, sanctified heart on the great day of judgment. We need not tremble with fear and doubt, but stand with confidence.
As Fanny Crosby so richly penned in 1873,
Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine
O what a foretaste of glory divine
Heir of salvation, purchase of God
I'm born of His Spirit, washed in His blood
In His Hands and In His Time,
Pastor Josh

12/2 Holiday Schedule, Church Elections, Young Adult Ministry, Legacy Giving
Dear Stillmeadow Family,
Our advent theme for 2024 is "Stand." In Luke 21, Jesus tells his disciples to be ready to stand when he returns. The posture of the believer is "Standing" in confidence in Jesus Christ. Here are the words to our call to worship in this season.
Advent is a season when we remember
That until Jesus comes again
the darkness of sin remains for a time
We know that despair and anxiety are here
We know that sorrow and hate coexist
We have felt their weight
We have even caused and participated in them
But every advent week we light a candle
We proclaim that in the arrival and reign of Jesus Christ
Hope overcomes despair
Peace overwhelms anxiety
Joy defeats sorrow
Love conquers hate
So, let us stand with hope
Let us stand in peace
Let us stand with joy
Let us stand in love
As we go through this season, would you consider the following?
Follow the Advent Devotional. This is a unique opportunity to draw near to God. The Sunday entries are written with families in mind and the daily devotions are for personal devotions. Pick one up at the Welcome Center or check it out online here.
Participate in the Christmas Blessing Tree. The tree has tags for the Nursing Home Blessing and a box for collecting items for Good News Global Hope Packs for York County Prison. We have received the GREATEST BLESSING EVER in Jesus Christ and He compels us to be a blessing. Instructions are on www.stillnaz.com/justmercy.
Invite a neighbor to dinner or worship. This can be a lonely time for our neighbors. Many times people are open to coming to church during the Christmas and New Year season. Ask God for an opportunity to invite a neighbor to worship or to a meal (or even both!).
In His Hands and In His Time,
Pastor Josh

Join Us for the Family Advent Experience This Sunday (Nov 24)
Hey Family!
I’m looking forward to this Sunday’s Family Advent Experience in our 9AM and 10:30AM services on our Stillmeadow Lane Campus.
This is an All Generations Worship service. We will have the Grace Space open in the Family Life Center and the Nursery Available for children ages 0-2.
The service is a little different than our normal adult Sunday services. We play games, do more interactive teaching and try to engage the kids more. And the first time we did a Family Advent Experience, one of our congregation came up to me after the service and said, “Whose idea was this?” I told them and they said, “Well, it was a GREAT IDEA!” I agree!
Our goal is to remember that Jesus is the reason for the season. He is the meaning behind all the symbols, trees and lights. He is the one we live for!
So, I look forward to worshiping the Reason for Season with you on Sunday in a creative way!
Also, we’ll be handing out our Advent Devotionals that day. You can grab one at the Welcome Desk. If you want to subscribe, please do that HERE.
AND! Join us for the Community Thanksgiving Dinner: 2-5
And from 2-5 on Sunday afternoon, we’re having a Community Thanksgiving Dinner at our York City Campus (350 Chestnut Street, York, PA 17403). If you haven’t signed up to serve, come on down and enjoy a fresh meal and fellowship with friends from the neighborhood and various churches!
Grace and Peace,

Family Advent Experience next Sunday, Christmas Choir and Discipleship Courses
Dear Stillmeadow Family,
What a blessing it was to receive the word from Chaplain Mike yesterday (WATCH HERE). He truly is following the pattern of our savior’s incarnation by going into the prison and serving our incarcerated neighbors. And you can join him by praying, volunteering or donating. Find out more at www.stillnaz.com/justmercy.
Chaplain Mike’s message and mission remind me of what Tom Noble said in his third book of his first volume of Christian Theology.
The Son of God did not become incarnate as our blood relative only to pay our 'debt', but so that we might come to know him as our dear Brother.
He wants to save us from becoming sad, malformed, self-centred, economic machines, scrabbling for advantage or even, like the beasts, for mere survival.
He wants to bring us into his banqueting house, and his banner over us is love.
He wants to wrap us in his arms within the personal relationships of the Holy Trinity.
What Jesus does is what Chaplain Mike is aiming to do. To join the men inside YCP and help them see God’s infinite love! To help them move from “mere survival” to thriving in God’s love.
Please take time to pray through the opportunities we are highlighting each week this month. Ask God how he is inviting you to respond and represent his grace and truth in these days. Prayer Groups, Advent 2024, Bake Sale!
Dear Stillmeadow Family,
In our sermon series Just Mercy, we are examining how God calls us to become involved in his redemption plan for the world.
As I prepared for Sunday’s message, this quote from one of our Nazarene theologians, Tom Noble grabbed my heart’s attention:
The Lord wants to relate to us not merely as the Creator to his creatures, nor as a king to his subjects, nor as a master to redeemed slaves, nor as a judge to pardoned convicts. He comes in the Person of the Son because he wants to adopt us into personal relationships of love and trust within the familial fellowship (koinonia) of his Holy Spirit.
In the incarnation, we see that God didn’t fix the problems of the world from a distance physically or relationally. Jesus is physically joined to us and relationally available to us today! When we put our faith in him, we are adopted into His family and become a part of his family outreach into the world. The church is essentially a family working with God to extend the family!
This has massive implications for our work in the world. As we noted in Sunday, Jesus (and Boaz before him) reminds us that serving others comes with a price, is an expression of obedience to God and requires us to get personal.
When we asked, “Will you stand for the children?” we were asking, “Will you be like Jesus and pay the price, be obedient and get personal?”
Please take time to pray through the opportunities we are highlighting each week this month. Ask God how he is inviting you to respond and represent his grace and truth in these days. Community Thanksgiving Meal, 30 Hour Famine, Celebrate Recovery
Dear Stillmeadow Family,
As we enter “Just Mercy Month” and the week of elections, let us remember a central tenet of our faith: incarnation.
Enfleshment is a rough translation of incarnation. God did not heal the wound of the world or deal with the deceptions in the world from a distance, but up close and in person.
John 1:14 says “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”
Colossians 1:27 says the mysterious good news is “Christ in you.” So, God continues his enfleshment through the church. We are now invited to embody his grace and truth through acts of justice and habits of mercy.
Please take time to pray through the opportunities we are highlighting each week this month. Ask God how he is inviting you to respond and represent his grace and truth in these days. Just Mercy Month, 30 Hour Famine, Life Groups and More
Dear Stillmeadow Family,
“Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you!” (the crowd to blind Bartimaeus in Mark 10:49)
That crowd witnessed to Bartimaeus. They were agents of grace in his life. Jesus had heard Bartimaeus’ cries for mercy and stopped and gave this command to the crowd: “Call him.”
Do you see what trust Jesus put into that crowd? He invited them into the miracle of salvation. He could have made his way to the man, but instead he empowered the crowd to witness.
In a very real way, this is what we’re called to do as believers. In a world of people burdened with anxiety, sickness, brokenness and pain, we are instructed to “call them.”
Who might God be sending you to this week to share “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you”?
As you respond to his call, engage his word this week. Here’s the reading schedule that includes further exploration of what the Bible has to say about marriage…

Church Directory, 30 Hour Famine, Discipleship Courses
Dear Stillmeadow Family,
We live in a time when churches, companies and countries have experienced the dark corruption of leadership and abuse of power. Historically, this is nothing new. The Old Testament is full of stories of kings and parents and siblings misusing the authority given to them.
Jesus even said about the Gentile leaders of his time: “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them.”
But he called his disciples to lead small.
43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Do you have that memorized? It packs a powerful punch, because it ties together the fact that 1) Jesus gave his life as ransom and 2) Jesus gave his life as an example.
Jesus died to free us to follow his example of service.
It’s time for the church (me and you) to serve like Jesus with his help.
Let’s engage in his word every day this week. Here’s the reading schedule…
Weekly Reading (October 20-26)

Thursday: Psalm 126; Hebrews 7:1-10

Church Board Nominations, Youth Fall Dates, and the Fests!
Dear Stillmeadow Family,
As we prepared for this Sunday’s message on wealth out of the passage in Mark 10:17-31, I was drawn to the three verses where Jesus is described as “looking.” Look at the “look” and hear the words of our Savior Jesus.
(10:21) Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
(10:23) Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!”
(10:27) Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”
Jesus, our real Treasure, invites us to leave everything and follow Him and discover that we have everything in Him. Part of the Christian journey is the movement from treasuring created stuff to treasuring the Creator of all the stuff. It is easy to try to hoard earthly treasure instead of surrendering it to God’s heavenly purposes. But Jesus has accomplished what was impossible for us: freeing us from all sin (including greed and coveting) into a life of loving sacrificially. So, as you consider how God is calling you to grow in the stewarding of your wealth, remember that Jesus looks at you and loves you!
And pay attention this week to the wisdom found in scripture with our daily reading plan.

Responding to Hurricane Helene
Dear Stillmeadow Family,
The news continues to bring in more stories of devastation from Hurricane Helene, where great damage occured across the southeastern states, especially North Carolina. The residents will be cleaning up and rebuilding from this storm for months to come.
Will you join us in helping with the clean up? Here are five ways.
Pray.
Volunteer for a Disaster Team Trip to North Carolina.
Give to the Stillmeadow Disaster Relief Fund.
Give to the Nazarene Compassionate Ministries Fund.
Put together a Crisis Care Kit.
Pray
Let us all pray for the communities as they mourn for those who have died, as they grieve the destruction of their homes and towns, as they work to rebuild from the storm. Let us pray for the volunteers and organizations who are showing up to help. Let us pray for the officials as they guide the rebuilding process.
Want to join the team?
We do not yet have solid dates for our trip, but the cost for travel and lodging is covered by Stillmeadow’s Disaster Relief Fund. If you want to help, fill out the form below. Ages 16 and above can participate, and all minors must be accompanied by a parent.

Want to give to Nazarene Compassionate Ministries?
From NCM, we read: “Nazarene church members, pastors, and disaster volunteers are serving in impacted communities. Adrian Camp and Conference Center, part of the Georgia District, was severely impacted. In Nashville, Georgia, the Church of the Nazarene sanctuary sustained heavy damage and may be unrepairable. Nazarene Disaster Response teams are mobilizing to travel to impacted areas to provide cleanup and recovery assistance, and many local churches are providing food, water, and Crisis Care Kits to their affected neighbors. Your gift will be used for immediate needs, long-term recovery, and rebuilding efforts.”
Want to put together a Crisis Care Kit?
Nazarene Compassionate Ministries helps people affected by disasters, famines, etc, by sending Crisis Care Kits full of necessary supplies. Assembling Crisis Care Kits is a great way for families to involve children who cannot volunteer to help or donate funds.
Click here for instructions on Crisis Care Kit assembly.
Grace and Peace,

Youth Fall Dates, Young Adult Ministry and the Fests!
Dear Stillmeadow Family,
As I prepared for Sunday’s message on marriage I was repeatedly reminded that strong marriages are not built on feelings but on faithfulness. In Two Part Invention, a memoir on marriage that Madeleine L’ Engle wrote as her husband was battling cancer, she said:
“…a long term marriage has to move past chemistry to compatibility, to friendship, to companionship.”
A beautiful picture of a gospel-oriented marriage companionship is Priscilla and Aquila who accompanied Paul on his missionary journeys (Acts 18:18), taught the budding preacher Apollos the fullness of the gospel (Acts 18:26), and hosted the growing church family in their home in Rome (Romans 16:3-5). William James Jennings described their partnership like this:
“Priscilla and Aquila are a couple under ideal conditions; they are not consumed with self-preservation but with a shared life that yields to the Spirit.”
When Jesus gave his instructions on marriage in Mark 10:1-12, he was right in the middle of describing the essence of discipleship. And Dietrich Bonhoeffer comments, “The disciple’s exclusive adherence to Christ therefore extends to [their] married life. Christian marriage is marked by discipline and self-denial. Christ is Lord even of marriage…Christianity does not depreciate marriage but sanctifies it.”
May our approach to, conversations about and practice of marriage be salt and light in our community and world where people are suffering from the broken effects of putting feelings, chemistry and self-preservation first.
And let’s engage in the word every day this week. Here’s the reading schedule that includes further exploration of what the Bible has to say about marriage…

The Fests! Retiring Well, Children’s Ministry Update
Dear Stillmeadow Family,
This weekend, in our Saturday Child Dedication Service and in our Families Services, we celebrated 5 families dedicating 10 children!
And we contemplated what Jesus said in Mark 9:38-50, where he called his disciples to be responsible with the impact of their lives. To be responsible is to respond to the needs of our time and place with Jesus’ courage and grace.
In Jesus we see someone whose eyes saw the overlooked, whose hands touched the untouchable, and whose feet went to the unreached.
Jesus’ hyperbolic about “cutting off” eyes, hands and feet are intended to shock us into removing any habits that cause others or ourselves to stumble in faith. Our eyes, hands and feet have been given to us to bless, not to curse, to salt the earth, not to sour the earth.
As you go about your week, allow Jesus to lovingly examine your life and show you what needs to be cut out so that your life can be fully devoted to him in this time and place.
The last part of Psalm 19 is a perfect guide to praying this. Follow these words and listen to His voice today to be responsible with the life He has given you.
But who can discern their own errors?
Forgive my hidden faults.
Keep your servant also from willful sins;
may they not rule over me.
May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart
be pleasing in your sight,
Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.
And engage in the word every day this week. Here’s the reading schedule…

This pathway is not linear, but we grow when we gather together, when we take courses to grow in our spiritual formation, when we commit to a lifegroup to practice the mission of Jesus together, when we begin to lead others, and when we pray together. Join our discipleship pathway as we grow with Jesus and one another!
