Call to Worship: Psalm 77:1-12
Reflection Questions
Begin by meditating on Psalm 77:7-12. Think of a mighty deed that God has done and thank him for that.
In these reflection questions, we’re going to consider what we can gain from the three different approaches to the Song of Songs: 1) It’s an allegory about the relationship between God and the Israelites, 2) It’s an allegory about the relationship between Christ and the church, and 3) It’s a celebration of marital intimacy.
First, what does it reveal about God that he would describe himself as a faithful husband while describing the people of Israel as an unfaithful wife (i.e. in the book of Hosea)?
What does it reveal about the church that we can be described as the bride of Christ (i.e. in Ephesians 5:21-33)?
If Song of Songs is a celebration of intimacy within marriage, what are examples of how our culture is overly obsessed with sexuality (within or outside of marriage)?
What lessons (right or wrong) did you learn about sex growing up?
Read Song of Songs 4:8-4:16. How do the Lover and Beloved illustrate delight and intimacy in each other?
Instead of obsessing about sex (one extreme) or suppressing sexual intimacy (the other extreme), what can we learn from this and Paul’s guidance to husbands and wives in 1 Corinthians 7:1-7?
As you close in prayer, consider these invitations: 1) How can you receive/invest in more intimacy with Christ? 2) What is God leading your heart to take away regarding marital intimacy?
