WATCH THE SERVICE HERE

1 Kings 18:16-46, Malachi 4:5, Matthew 17:1-5

Call to Worship: Psalm 119:169-176

Reflection Questions

  1. Begin by praying Psalm 119:169-176.

  2. What is your understanding of the role of the prophet in the Old Testament? What do you know or remember about the prophet Elijah?

  3. How does the introduction of King Ahab in 1 Kings 16:29-33 show the spiritual battle happening in the life of the northern kingdom?

  4. What was the purpose of the battle of Baal and God in 1 Kings 18:16-46?

  5. If Elijah was to confront the American church, what would be on the opposite side of the Lord? What would Elijah challenge the church to leave behind in order to put their full trust in the Lord?

  6. Jump ahead in time to the gospel of Matthew 17:1-5. If you were a disciple waiting for Elijah (because of the promise in Malachi 4:5), how would you respond to seeing him with Jesus, your teacher?

  7. God the Father spoke and said: “This is my Son, whom I love, with him I am well pleased. Listen to Him!” (Matt 17:5) What needs to be put behind you so that you can listen to Jesus more fully?

  8. Close in prayer: Commit to stop wavering between two opinions. Commit to listening to Jesus first in all things. Ask God to prove himself to those you love who are in a spiritual battle.
